U.N. Human Rights Council Takes Aim at New Target: United Stateshttp://www.foxnews.com/world/2010/11/04/united-nations-human-rights-council/?test=latestnews
Excerpt: The United Nations Human Rights Council, a conclave of 47 nations that includes such notorious human rights violators as China, Cuba, Libya and Saudi Arabia, met in Geneva on Friday, to question the United States about its human rights failings.
It heard, among other things, that the U.S. discriminates against Muslims, that its police are barbaric and that it has been holding political prisoners behind bars for years.

10:10, "No Pressure" not just wrong, also evil

10/10/10, Welcome to the War.
The International Green Left movement is marking today with the launch of another world-wide climate change activist event entitled 10:10, which is an iniative for everyone to reduce their carbon emissions by 10% every year for ten years.  This seems noble enough, until you do the math and realize that to reach these extremists goals by the year 2020 and the outrageous goals of 2050, there will need to be a major worldwide reduction in human population which they regard as the vermin harming Mother Earth.  Usually the green left keeps their Eugenics roots well hidden from the public eye, little talk of forced-abortions, sterilization plans and totalitarian execution tactics used by those Chinese Communists they so admire.  Today, however, their true colors are pretty much out there in the open with the release of the short film "10:10 No Pressure" originally sponsored by the Sony corporation among other corporate sponsors.  Please use discretion when watching, the green left's "humor" is graphic, violent and full of disturbing images.
Welcome to the War, stand by and do nothing, let them use your kids to advance their cause or speak up and oppose this evil, anti-human iniative.  Good day.

National Academy of Sciences advances idea of depopulation to curb climate change

On the heels of the "No Pressure" climate change propaganda snuff film, more climate alarmist calls for reducing the world population by 2050, this published Tuesday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the study offers a novel way to quantify how changes in human population influence the buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Brian O'Neill, a scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo., was the lead author.
Excerpt: If global population were to grow by less than a billion by midcentury, instead of by more than 2 billion, as expected, it would be the equivalent of cutting as much as 29% of the emissions reductions needed by 2050 to keep the planet from tipping into a warmer, more dangerous zone. By the end of the century, it could cut fossil fuel pollution by 41%.
July 2009: Tie your tubes and save the planet?
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/greenspace/2009/07/population-control-global-warming.html
Excerpt: The greenhouse gas impact of an extra child is almost 20 times more significant than the amount any American would save by such practices as driving a fuel-efficient car, recycling or using energy-efficient light bulbs and appliances, according to Paul Murtaugh, an OSU professor of statistics. Under current U.S. consumption patterns, each child ultimately adds about 9,441 metric tons of CO2 to the carbon legacy of an average parent--about 5.7 times a person's lifetime emissions, he calculates.
"Many people are unaware of the power of exponential population growth," Murtaugh said. "Future growth amplifies the consequences of people's reproductive choices, the same way that compound interest amplifies a bank balance."

Nov 2008: Humanity's ever-bigger footprint
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/greenspace/2008/11/overpopulation.html
Excerpt: "Yet our demands continue to escalate, driven by the relentless growth in human population and in individual consumption," he wrote in the report. "Our global footprint now exceeds the world's capacity to regenerate by about 30 percent. If our demands on the planet continue at the same rate, by the mid-2030s, we will need the equivalent of two planets to maintain our lifestyles."

Asian Carp Czar named and World Bank Green Czars hired, where is Capt America?

On the Czar Wars front, John Goss is now the Asian Carp Czar who I can only assume has been called in to assist the over-matched and out-witted Great Lakes Czar, Cameron Davis, in the battle against fish.
Meanwhile, the World Bank wastes more money "beefing up its climate and alternative energy staff" with the hire of Cal-Berkeley Professor Daniel Kammen as the CTS for renewable energy and energy efficiency (an important position at any bank, no doubt) who joins another high-priced "The Weather Changes" MOA (Master of the Obvious in Administration), Andrew Steer.  Steer's job is entitled "special envoy on climate change" which again, is a position to be found on any respectable bank's executive hierarchy.  Who's next for climate jobs at the World Bank?  And what about non-climate related banking operations?  Will Chris Dodd retire from the U.S. Congress and turn up as head of mortgage lending at the World Bank?
Last but not least is coverage of Captain America, spotted in the English countryside.  I hope he arrives stateside in time to save the Union.
World Bank appoints clean energy "czar"
Excerpts:
WASHINGTON, Sept 9 (Reuters) - The World Bank on Thursday said it has appointed a California professor to lead its efforts to foster growth of alternative energy programs in developing countries.

Daniel Kammen, an energy professor at the University of California, Berkeley, will be chief technical specialist for renewable energy and energy efficiency, the bank said.
...
The bank is beefing up its climate and alternative energy staff as it supports action to limit deforestation and offers financing to start projects designed to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
In June, the bank hired the UK national Andrew Steer for the new job of special envoy on climate change. Steer oversees more than $6 billion in projects in the bank's Climate Investment Funds to fight the worst effects of global warming.

Emperor's latest grooves

Only one new czar in the past couple weeks, who is actually a retread czar, but The Emperor continues to bypass Senate confirmation using recess appointments.  Three of those recently including the rationing, socialist new Medicare chief.

Obama bypasses Senate for new Medicare chief

Senate Finance Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont., whose committee would have held Berwick's confirmation hearing, also said he was troubled by the recess appointment. "Senate confirmation of presidential appointees is an essential process prescribed by the Constitution that serves as a check on executive power," said Baucus. Berwick was nominated in April, and Finance Committee staff was still at work on the vetting process it undertakes prior to scheduling a confirmation hearing.

Thomas Sowell: Santa and Frank
http://townhall.com/columnists/ThomasSowell/2010/07/06/santa_and_frank
Excerpt:
People who remember the old comic strip "Peanuts" will recall an often repeated situation where Lucy offers to hold a football for Charlie Brown to kick. Then, as Charlie coming running up to kick it, Lucy snatches away the ball and Charlie Brown loses his balance and goes crashing on his backside.

The reason this same scene remained funny, despite how often it was repeated, is that in the later repetitions Charlie Brown would express suspicion at Lucy, recalling how she had tricked him before. She would then come up with some claim that she wasn't going to do that any more-- and of course she did.

There is a similar routine that has been repeated many times in Washington, over the years, with the Democrats playing Lucy and Republicans playing Charlie Brown.

It goes like this: Democrats start spending money wildly, handing out goodies to a wide range of people who they want to vote for them, while Republicans complain about deficits and the national debt. Then, when the public becomes alarmed about the debts that are piling up, the Democrats get the Republicans to vote for higher taxes to deal with the debt crisis, in the name of "fiscal responsibility."...

On the Bubble... College

The book is a helpful guide to savings, insurance and so forth with simple ratios to fit your circumstances.  When it addresses education debt, the author discusses the "higher education bubble" and recommends making higher education consumer decisions with a financial rationale rather than emotions.  Ohio State's recent 8.4% tuition increase had me poking around for more information on the bubble, with all of my Indoctrination U opinions aside, enjoy...

The Evolution of the College Dorm

Popping the Higher-Education Bubble
A new strategy to improve college access while reducing the taxpayer burden.
Excerpt: Over the past decade, federal spending on student aid has grown by 99 percent. But, as these economists would predict, college costs continue to rise. Since 1982, college tuition has increased by 439 percent — more than four times the rate of inflation and twice the rate of increase for medical care. The College Board reports that the total costs of attending four-year private and public universities this year were $35,600 and $26,700 respectively.

Bursting the Higher Ed Bubble
Excerpt: ...From an economic point of view, in other words, a college degree costs more and more and returns less and less. Kind of like a hot stock with a price-to-earnings ratio of 32, it's a prelude to a crash.
...

Over the longer run, however, universities, like other troubled institutions, will have to rethink the fundamentals of their work. Why does it take four years to complete a BA degree? Maybe liberal arts studies make more sense later in life?

But this rethinking should not stop with the universities. The entire American education establishment needs reform.

Maybe tough high school exit exams would serve the needs of employers who currently insist on a BA not for its own sake but as proof that a student was not too lazy or aimless to get one. Indeed, it could be that when the job market attaches less value to a piece of parchment, universities will at last lay aside their often ugly political preoccupations and rediscover their true mission: the pursuit of knowledge as a good in itself.

PIIGS AND SPACE (or Pearls to PIIGS and Chinese Family Planning in Space)

Sovereign Danger (PIIGS)
Excerpts: Portugal on Tuesday became only the latest of the so-called PIIGS — Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece and Spain — to be hit by speculation that it might soon fail. Greece is already technically in default on its debts, and has had to make humiliating requests for aid from the EU, U.S. and IMF.
....Meanwhile, total U.S. debt is set to swell from about 60% of GDP just three years ago to 115% or higher by 2014, according to IMF estimates. "For all intents and purposes," says Cato Institute economist Daniel J. Mitchell, "America is on a path to become a European-style welfare state."

End of A Charming Menace, Beginning of Attack of the Drones

So ends Episode I and begins Episode II...

EPISODE I: A CHARMING MENACE

Turmoil has engulfed the Global Economy.
The Recession deepens as reckless stimulus
spending and bail-outs continue to apply
downward pressure on economies across the globe.
Climate change and the planet's inhabitants' ability
to effect or control the global temperature is in dispute.

Hoping to resolve the matter with the silencing of
sound scientific discussion, the G-8 has stopped
all debate and unanimously agreed to pursue
                  green house gas reduction.

While the congress of the Republic passes
liberal activist legislation at a dizzying pace,
government deficit spending spirals out of control,
the public sector expansion marches on and the
free market system teeters on the brink of destruction.
This alarming chain of events has emboldened the
Supreme Emperor who has secretly assembled an
unknown number of czars in an attempt to send the
country into the global misery they call "social justice".
The turmoil has divided the czars across ideological lines
ushering in the era of "THE CZAR WARS"....

Happy New Year

Happy New Year from theczarwars.blogspot.com.
We interupt this infrequent serial cartoon with a short message about fresh starts and new beginnings...

After a devastating end to the year, image consultants have already begun to pick up the pieces of the brand that had been a trusted household name.  They're taking a new approach with lower price point products and focusing first on appealing to the Baby Boomers.  Critics suggest they're targeting those with the shortest or even failing memories, but I think it makes a lot of sense to start there on many levels.  However, this first example of endorsing nostalgic hard candies from yesteryear is a bittersweet reminder that rebuilding the brand will not be easy to forget overnight.

Happy New Year...
